Fifth Annual Black Tie Walk Affair to Benefit FAU’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center
Festive Indoor Event to Help Families Coping with Memory Loss

BOCA RATON, FL (July 22, 2010) – The Caring Hearts Auxiliary of Florida Atlantic University’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center will present its fifth annual “Keep Memories Alive Walk,” a black tie walk affair, to benefit the Center.  The walk will take place on Sunday, November 7 at 9 a.m. at the Town Center at Boca Raton. The 2009 event attracted 300 walkers and raised more than $100,000.

Caring Hearts Auxiliary board members Karen Hoffheimer and Deborah Lindstrom are co-chairing the walk with auxiliary members Debbie Gonzalez and Morgan Green.  Christine E. Lynn has been named honorary chair, and Bobby Campbell has generously committed to a “presenting” sponsorship.

“The Black Tie Walk Affair is a lighthearted, festive event that continues to grow in popularity and exceed our expectations,” said Patricia Thomas, Caring Hearts Auxiliary president.  “It’s such a great event for friends and family to get together, dress in casual ‘black tie’ costumes, and have fun in support of the families in our community who are coping with memory loss.”

Walkers are encouraged to form teams and compete for prizes in fun categories, including Largest Team, Highest Fundraising Team, and Best Team Costume.

The Memory and Wellness Center, located on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, is part of FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and averages 14,000 visits per year.  The Center offers a wide range of services and programs to individuals with mild to moderate memory disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Visits begin with a comprehensive memory evaluation.  The evaluation results often help diagnose a memory disorder and develop a treatment plan in cooperation with a patient’s physicians.

The Day Center provides an active and secure place for families to bring spouses or parents who are experiencing memory loss, and the caregiver support programs have a positive impact on life at home.

“The generosity of our sponsors and walkers enables the Center to continue state-of-the art services to families living with memory disorders,” said Denise Sparks, director of the Center.  “Last year’s event helped fund 32 Day Center scholarships and caregiver support programs.  We are deeply appreciative and know that each dollar counts.”
