Board of Governors appoints Frank T. Brogan as chancellor of the State University System of Florida

            TALLAHASSEE, FL (July 17, 2009)
 – The Board of Governors today appointed Frank T. Brogan, president of Florida Atlantic University, as chancellor of the State University System of Florida.

Brogan was recommended for appointment by the Chancellor Search Committee after interviews with Brogan and Roderick G.W. Chu, chancellor emeritus of the Ohio Board of Regents.   The full Board of Governors, during a conference call, made the appointment on a unanimous vote.

“I believe we have someone in Frank Brogan who is ready on day one to lead the State University System in the right direction,” said Sheila M. McDevitt, chair of the Board of Governors.  “He has the experience and the good judgment we were looking for in a chancellor.  He will help us build a strong relationship with the Florida Legislature and help the Board of Governors lead our universities into Florida’s knowledge-based future.”

Brogan said he was honored by the board’s confidence and eager to get to work to move the State University System forward. “I believe having strong and respected universities is crucial to Florida’s economy,” Brogan said.   “We need to prepare the citizens of Florida for competition in the knowledge- and innovation-based economy.  I want to work with the Legislature on a plan to prepare our universities to meet this challenge, as our success as the State University System will determine the economic success of our state as a whole.  The sooner we move boldly in this direction to strengthen the state university system, the sooner we can take advantage of opportunities that exist due to conditions in other states. “

McDevitt thanked the other candidates for offering their names for consideration. “The Chancellor Search Committee had a strong group to consider,” she said. “Frank Brogan was the standout in our interviews, and the consensus choice of the Board of Governors.  All of the candidates made a strong impression on the search committee members.  We wish them all the greatest success.”

Carolyn King Roberts, the chair of the Chancellor Search Committee, thanked her fellow committee members for their service. “The selection of Frank Brogan as chancellor is a turning point for the Board of Governors and the 11 public universities,” she said. “The members of the Chancellor Search Committee did an excellent job, and I thank them for their help in making this important selection and appointment.”

The Board of Governors is the constitutional body created by voters in 2002 to guide the State University System of Florida.
