FAU Ranks Among Top 100 Colleges and Universities in Producing Undergraduate Degrees for Minorities

BOCA RATON, FL (June 24, 2008) - Florida Atlantic University was ranked as one of the top 50 four-year colleges in the nation for conferring bachelor’s degrees on African-Americans according to a survey in “Diverse: Issues in Higher Education,” a magazine published bi-weekly that informs leaders from academe, industry and public policy about current trends and issues that are going on in the United States.

“Florida Atlantic University becomes more diverse year after year, enrolling students of all backgrounds,” said FAU President Frank T. Brogan. “Being recognized for our ongoing successful effort in this important area of academic life is a real honor.”

              For the 2006-07 academic year, FAU conferred a total of 1,765 bachelor’s degrees on minority students. Among those graduates, FAU was ranked 28th in conferring bachelor’s degrees on Hispanic American students, up 14 percent from the 2005-06 academic year.

Within biological and biomedical sciences, 51 bachelor’s degrees were earned by Hispanic American students, ranking FAU 17 th among 50 institutions, up from 22 nd from the previous year.

             In conferring bachelor’s degrees in engineering, FAU ranked 24 th in the African-American students’ category, up 93 percent from the 2005-06 academic year. In addition, FAU ranked 37 th for conferring engineering bachelor’s degrees on Hispanic American students, an increase of 24 percent.

             FAU’s student population of 26,000 showcases diversity, with 57 percent of the student body being Caucasian, 17 percent African-American, 17 percent Hispanic, four percent international and five percent Asian.
