Dr. Michael Dennis Appointed Chairman of the Advisory Board for FAU's Medical School
BOCA RATON, FL (May 19, 2011) – Dr. Michael T.B. Dennis recently was appointed chairman of the advisory board for Florida Atlantic University's Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine. Dennis, a long-time champion for FAU's new medical school in Palm Beach County, was appointed by Dr. Michael Friedland, vice president for medical programs and dean of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.
"The success of the Schmidt College of Medicine thus far, including receiving preliminary accreditation and attracting more than 1,500 applicants, is due in large part to the overwhelming assistance we have received from our community and supporters, including Dr. Dennis," said Friedland. "His expertise will prove invaluable in leading the advisory board as the Schmidt College of Medicine welcomes its first class of future physicians on August 1, 2011."
As a member of the advisory board, Dennis acts as a liaison between the medical school and the community. Specifically, the Board provides advice, counsel and support to the dean, and champions the medical school's philanthropic prioritiessuch as medical student scholarshipsto enhance the quality, reputation and strength of the College; and represents the community's needs and interests.
"I am pleased and privileged to lead the advisory board as we celebrate the inaugural year of Palm Beach County's first medical school," said Dennis. "Medical education is the key to addressing Florida's looming physician shortage, and FAU's unique curriculum and world-class faculty will help produce an outstanding new generation of physicians who will live and serve in our community."
Dennis, a retired plastic surgeon, is founder and president of Hand-X-Tenders, a company that creates surgical instrumentation for the operating room and devices to increase the manual function of the disabled. He also is co-founder of the Santa Barbara Breast Cancer Institute, partner in Santa Barbara Capital, board member for the Florida Public Health Institute and an adviser to the Health Care District of Palm Beach County. Additionally, Dennis founded the physician's assistant program at Stanford University and the medical education forum of the Palm Beaches, Inc., served as vice chairman of the Civic Association 2006-08, was a diplomate of the American Board of Plastic Surgery and chairman of the Town of Palm Beach's Medical Care Commission.
