FAU Benefactors Honored at Scholarship Luncheons

BOCA RATON, FL (May 6, 2011) – F lorida Atlantic University’s Division of University Advancement recently brought together scholarship benefactors and student recipients at two luncheons at the Live Oak Pavilion on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. Both events allowed the FAU community to publicly thank donors who have generously championed and sustained the dreams and accomplishments of deserving students.

Guests were welcomed at both luncheons by FAU Foundation Board Member Peter LoBello. Since 1999, LoBello and his wife, Kerry, have been strong supporters of FAU athletics and academic scholarship programs, and have impacted the lives of numerous students.

“On behalf of the Foundation Board, I offer sincere thanks to all of our donors who are here today. We could not do it without you,” LoBello said. “And to our scholarship recipients, I hope that you will always remember that someone believed in your education.”

At the luncheon for the athletics department, Broward campuses, College of Education and Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts & Letters, vocal performance student Edgar Miguel Abr é u spoke on behalf of scholarship recipients and displayed his talent as an opera singer by serenading a table of donors. Abr é u, a first-generation U.S. citizen and first-generation college student, received five named music scholarships and graduated during the spring commencement ceremonies with honors.

“Thanks to the generosity of FAU donors, I was able to receive a college education and truly focus on my studies,” said Abr é u. “I was empowered knowing that other people believed in me, and determined to show that their money was being put to good use on my education.”

Scholarship recipient Joshua Scholl spoke at the luncheon for the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, College of Business, and College of Engineering and Computer Science. As a member of FAU’s tennis team, Scholl received an athletic scholarship, as well as the Dean’s Scholarship for Excellence in Biological Science. He   was recently named to ESPN the Magazine’s At-Large Academic All-District First Team.

Scholl spoke about how his passion for reptiles and environmental conservation led him to an opportunity to research gopher tortoises at the FAU campus preserve, and get involved with organizations such as SEEDS (Strategies for Ecology Education, Diversity and Sustainability) and the FAU Conservation Committee. In February, he was featured in a Palm Beach Post article about FAU’s gopher tortoise population and his work to help protect it.

“I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve had because of financial aid,” said Scholl. “Without scholarship funds, I would not have been able to conduct research or engage in community service to the extent that I have. I hope that FAU scholarships will continue to open doors to research, volunteerism and academic excellence for future generations of students.”
