FAU Hosts Free Hearing Screenings

BOCA RATON, FL (May 10, 2010) – Florida Atlantic University’s National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association will offer free hearing screenings to the public and FAU community on Monday, May 24 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. to increase public awareness on hearing loss and tinnitus.  The screenings will take place on the fourth floor of FAU’s College of Education building, Communication Disorders Clinic, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. No appointments are necessary, as the screenings will be completed on a first-come, first-served basis.

The month of May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, and Tinnitus Awareness Week (May 16-22) is dedicated to gathering public awareness about this medical condition. Hearing screening tests provide a quick way to detect hearing loss.  Those who pass hearing screenings are presumed to have no hearing loss, but a more in-depth evaluation by an audiologist might be required for those who do not pass.

Tinnitus is defined as a sensation of hearing sounds, with no external origin, inside the ears or in the head.  It is often associated with a sound in one or both ears, generally a buzzing, ringing or whistling sound that may be caused by a specific condition, such as an ear infection, the use of certain drugs, a blocked auditory tube or canal, or a head injury.

FAU’s National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association is a pre-professional association for students interested in the study of communication sciences and disorders.

For more information, contact Dr. Ali Danesh at 561-297-2071 or tinnitus@fau.edu.
