FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters Recognizes Top Students and Faculty

BOCA RATON, FL (May 19, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters recently recognized students and faculty with exemplary talents and academic accomplishments at the college’s 10th Annual Awards Celebration held on   FAU’s Boca Raton campus. The event was also an occasion to recognize donors who have given to the college’s many departments and programs.  

A total of 224 students received scholarships and honors for excellence in a variety of fields.    Prizes were awarded for excellence in art, music and theatre, and for accomplishment in anthropology, classical studies, history, Holocaust and Jewish studies, women’s studies and other areas.  

Some new awards this year included the Community Foundation for Palm Beach and Martin Counties’ Art Educators Fellowship; the Julius Kaufman Art Educators Fellowship/Internship; the ChariTEES FAU Art Competition sponsored by  Jeffrey Firestone; the Jeffrey Firestone Concerto Winner Awards and “Take Note” Music Scholarship Fund; the   Inez Persson Bailyn Scholarship and Internship; the Hugh W. Ripley Endowed Prize in History; the John S. and Zilpha D. Poli Music Scholarship; The Duprees Endowed Music Scholarship Founded by Michael and DeeDee Groskin; the Dr. Richard W. J. Hayman Scholarship in Music established by Joe Ferrer; the Swing and Jazz Preservation Society Award in memory of Al Nierel; the Rotary Club of Boca Raton Sunrise Peace Studies Fellowships, and the Patricia M. Courtney Doctoral Fellowship.

Other donors recognized at the event were Frances Edelman, who sponsors 11 awards throughout the college; Jerry and Marisa Kennedy, who sponsor awards in the anthropology department; Claire and Mary Dorst, who sponsor awards in the visual arts and art history department; Sylvia Rosen, with  awards in ceramics; David and Alfrede Myerson, who sponsor an award in art history and in fine arts; Karen O’Neil and Susan Sabin, members of the Delray Art League; Marjorie O’Sullivan, who sponsors   Travel-to-Research Grants for history students in memory of her husband John O’Sullivan; several members of Il Circolo, the Italian Cultural Society of the Palm Beaches, including Josephine Groen, Pat and Sally Valenti and Barbara Quirk; Gene and Ruth Crabb, for their support of the music department; Suzanne Klein and her parents, Eugene and Serena Kirsch, for their support of the music department; Dick Hudson, for the Howard Pearce Thesis Award; Ginny Huntzinger, for her Boca Raton Lifelong Learning Society scholarships; Jackie Becker, for a political science scholarship; and Doug Gatlin, for a political science scholarship.

Faculty awards went to Mark Frezzo, assistant professor in the department of sociology, for the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, and Elena Machado, assistant professor in the department of English, for the Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising.   George Sparks, director of FAU’s School of the Arts, and Jeff Galin, professor, department of English and director of the University Center for Excellence in Writing, were also recognized for receiving FAU’s President’s Leadership Awards.
