FAU’s Greek Life Raises Money for Haiti Relief

BOCA RATON, FL (April 20, 2010) – Florida Atlantic University’s fraternity and sorority community recently raised more than $3,700 during Greek Week 2010 at the university’s Boca Raton campus. More than 500 students involved in Greek life participated this year, donating the monies raised to the Clinton/Bush Haiti Relief Fund.

“Giving to those in need is such an important part of the fraternity and sorority experience here at FAU,” said Michelle Lauber, Greek Week executive director, Alpha Xi Delta member and student in FAU’s College of Education. “Greek Week 2010 provided us with a great platform and the chance to make a difference.  We hope that students, faculty and staff of FAU will continue to support those victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti.”

Greek Week, an annual tradition at FAU for more than a decade, provides students with opportunities to reach out and help through philanthropy and service. This year’s donation was the most-ever raised, and was garnered through the sale of official Greek Week 2010 T-shirts, as well as through a spirited activity called “Penny Wars.” “Penny Wars” divided the 17 participating fraternities and sororities into four teams, with each team responsible for collecting coins and bills from passers-by on FAU’s Breezeway in a creative, point-driven competition. Other point-gathering activities and contests held during Greek Week 2010 included a talent show, a table decorating challenge, and Greek games and sports. Bringing home the first place trophy for the entire week of events was Team Deltapalooza.
