FAU Exhibition Features 2010 MFA Graduates Painting Artist Christina Major and Ceramic Artist Bethany Cohen

BOCA RATON (April 8, 2010) – The University Galleries in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present “Components of Self and An Intimate Encounter,” an exhibition featuring painter Christina Major and ceramic artist Bethany Cohen.  The exhibition will open on Friday, April 16 and run throughout the summer in the Schmidt Gallery on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.  There will be an opening reception in the Schmidt Gallery on Thursday, April 15, from 6 to 8 p.m.  The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public.

Major is a portrait painter interested in the ways the identity of both artist and subject can coexist in a painting.  Major’s graduate thesis exhibition, Components of Self, evolved from her desire to combine large scale portrait painting with writing.  She developed methods of using paint to express a merging of herself with the individual painted in the portrait, resulting in a hybrid of her and the person depicted.

Ceramic artist Cohen has created An Intimate Encounter with miniature repositories. Her work is a reflection of the American cultural need for “more” in contrast to the human need for intimacy from within that abundance. It questions how one can find a level of kinship within excess. Cohen’s exhibition is a personal response as to whether the need for intimacy with “one” engenders the quest for “many,” or whether envelopment in the “many” drives the need to find intimacy with “one.”

The University Galleries are open Tuesday through Friday, 1 to 4 p.m. and Saturdays, 1 to 5 p.m. The galleries are closed Sunday and Monday. Adult groups, school field trips and university classes are welcome at alternative hours by appointment. Guided tours for groups are also available by appointment.
