FAU Opens Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Students

BOCA RATON, FL (March 16, 2011) –  Florida Atlantic University’s Division of Student Affairs recently established the LGBTQA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and allies) Center at FAU’s Boca Raton campus.  Located within the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the center provides a place for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students to share their experiences with one another.

“We created the center to establish a place lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students can call home and talk about their experiences and issues,” said Juan Izaguirre, director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs at FAU. “We’re also providing a safe place for students who are questioning their sexual identity and for allies of gays and lesbians who also might need to talk or learn more.”

The idea for the center began after the creation of the FAU task force on LGBT issues and the “Safe Zone” training conducted by FAU’s Today and Beyond Wellness Center.  Safe Zone prepares individuals in the university community to act as allies for LGBT students who need support.

“LGBT students are often faced with additional stressors on top of those that every college student deals with,” said Lauren Ann Walleser, the center’s graduate assistant.  “In addition to studying, they’re beginning the stages of coming out, or dealing with harassment or bullying on and off campus.  The center is a place for fostering celebration of one’s identity and can direct students to resources they may not otherwise know how to find.”

Professional staff and trained volunteers are available to offer emotional support in addition to Counseling Center resources, and literature and videos on gender orientation also will be provided at the center.  Future activities include a mixture of social and educational events.
