FAU Football 2011 Schedule Set

On-campus Stadium Opens October 15 Versus Western Kentucky

BOCA RATON, FL (March 1, 2011) –Florida Atlantic University’s 2011 football schedule has been set. As the team steps into the program’s second decade, the Owls continue to challenge themselves with one of the most competitive non-conference schedules in the nation. FAU also will play in its new 30,000-seat on-campus football stadium for the first time when the Owls host Western Kentucky University on Saturday, October 15.

”The first five games demonstrate that we will go anywhere to play the best teams in America,” said Howard Schnellenberger, FAU’s head football coach. “Five of the last six games are home. And now when we are on our Boca Raton campus, we truly are home. What a monumental day October 15 th will be.”

FAU will open the season on Saturday, September 3, at the University of Florida, under the direction of newly hired head coach Will Muschamp. It will be a return trip to the “Swamp” for FAU, which played in Gainesville in 2007 against the then-defending national champions. The following week, FAU will return to East Lansing, Michigan on Saturday, September 10, where the team once fell to Michigan State University in a rain-soaked 2008 game.

Following a one week hiatus, the Owls will travel to Auburn, Alabama where they will face the Auburn University Tigers on Saturday, September 24 for the first time. It will be the eighth trip to the state of Alabama, the most visited state in the program’s 10-year history. It also will mark the second time FAU has faced a defending national champion in the program’s 10 years.

The Owls will then open the 2011 Sun Belt Conference season playing their fourth and fifth-consecutive games on the road. FAU will travel to Lafayette, Louisiana for a game on Saturday, October 1 versus the University of Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns and will be at the University of North Texas, in Denton, Texas on Saturday, October 8.

Saturday, October 15 will follow as one of the most important days in FAU football history with the opening of its $70 million, 30,000-seat on-campus stadium.  The stadium, featuring 6,000 premium seats, including 24 suites, 26 loge boxes, 1,000 premier club seats and 4,000 priority club seats, will host the latest, state-of-the art amenities. The Owls first opponent in the newly constructed stadium will be Western Kentucky.

“Bring it home,” said Craig Angelos, FAU’s athletics director. “The football team has played 10 seasons away from home. The Owls will come home to play in an on-campus stadium that will be unmatched by anyone. This is 13 years in the making, and I encourage all to purchase season tickets today. It will be a historic opportunity for FAU and its surrounding communities.”

FAU will then play host to Middle Tennessee State University on Saturday, October 22 and Arkansas State University on Saturday, November 5. The team will travel to FIU on Saturday, November 12 and then to Troy University in Alabama on Saturday, November 19. The regular-season schedule will wrap at home with a non-conference contest versus UAB, on Saturday, November 26, and the final home game for the 2011 season on Saturday, December 3 versus ULM.

To be one of the first to experience the 2011 season in the on-campus stadium, season ticket packages can be purchased with prices beginning as low as $135 if purchased before May 6. After May 6, a season ticket package will begin at $150.
