FAU’s Center for Civic Engagement and Service Take Students on an ‘Alternative Spring Break’

BOCA RATON, FL (March 3, 2008) – Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Civic Engagement and Service (CCES) has taken 26 FAU students representing all seven of its campuses on an “Alternative Spring Break.” The students, who left on Friday, February 29, will camp at four different Florida state parks – O’Leno State Park in High Springs; Silver River State Park in Ocala; Lake Louisa State Park in Clermont; and Highlands Hammock State Park in Sebring, returning Wednesday, March 5.

Each student will earn five hours of volunteer time at each park for the group’s community service project by participating in a trail clean-up.  Ranger programs at O’Leno State Park and Silver River State Park also will focus on the history of Florida, as well as the environment.  The trip supports the university’s Mission Green effort and will teach students about the environmental hazards affecting Florida’s natural resources and steps toward creating a more sustainable natural environment.

The CCES is a university-wide initiative that develops partnerships between the university and general community, providing service opportunities to faculty, staff and students. The center also promotes the link between curriculum and service, fostering civic awareness and future leaders through civic responsibility and community service. The CCES serves students on all of FAU’s campuses, with offices located at Boca Raton, Davie, Jupiter and the Treasure Coast campuses.

The “Alternative Spring Break” also is sponsored by Students Advocation Volunteer Involvement (SAVI), an FAU Student Government Association program, as well as FAU’s Student Affairs’ Leadership Development program.
