FAU Receives Record Number of
Freshman Applications for Fall 2011 Semester
On-campus Housing Applications also Reach Record High
BOCA RATON, FL (February 9, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University received more than 18,940 freshman applications thus far for the fall 2011 semester, a record for the University. This number represents a 96 percent increase over the 9,642 applications that were received this time last year.
Overall, FAU already has seen an increase of more than 4,000 in-state applications, as well as more than 300 out-of-state applications as compared to those received for the fall 2010 semester. Freshman applicants have until May 1 to apply for the fall 2011 semester.
To date, FAU’s department of housing and residential life has received 335 applications for on-campus housing for the fall 2011 semester, also a record for the University. This is a 76 percent increase over the 190 applications received last year. Campus tour requests are also up 30 percent compared to last year.
“This is a very strong indication of the degree to which we are succeeding in making FAU a university of first choice for first-time-in-college students,” said FAU President Mary Jane Saunders. “Word is obviously spreading that Florida Atlantic University has more and more to offer students who seek the traditional American college experience.”
In response to the significant number of highly qualified freshman applicants, FAU is in the process of creating the Elite Owl Scholarship. This merit scholarship will complement existing scholarship and need-based grant opportunities.
Saunders, along with FAU’s Board of Trustees, has embraced the goal of transforming FAU into an institution of first choice for entering college freshmen. Academic programs have been complemented by collaborations with world-class research institutes, including Scripps Florida, the Max Planck Florida Institute, and Torrey-Pines. In addition, FAU opened a new platinum LEED-certified College of Engineering and Computer Science building, and a Culture and Society building featuring Living Room Theaters, four, 50-seat theaters that are used during the day by FAU’s film study program in the School of Communication and Multimedia Studies.
Student life on the Boca Raton campus is greatly enhanced with the opening of the new student recreation and wellness center. In addition, there are several construction projects under way that promise to bring a whole new level of excitement to student life at FAU. Construction of Phase One of the Innovation Village apartment complex includes two apartment buildings totaling 489,000 square feet. It will provide 1,216 beds for upper-division and graduate students, and is scheduled to open in August at the start of the fall 2011 semester. Also, the 30,000-seat FAU stadium – the centerpiece of Innovation Village – will be located in the north central area of campus. Home of the Owl football team, the open-air stadium, a $70 million project, is slated to open in October and will feature 6,000 premium seats, including 24 suites, 26 loge boxes, 1,000 premier club seats and 4,000 priority club seats, along with state-of-the-art amenities.
