FAU’s Wilkes Honors College Student Receives Award in National Essay Contest

JUPITER, FL (February 18, 2010) – Christina Turn, a freshman at Florida Atlantic University’s Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, was awarded honorable mention in a scholarship competition  sponsored by the national non-partisan website Our Voice Our Country.   This prestigious competition drew 190 essays from students across the United States who posted concise, articulate descriptions of what they observe to be urgent national problems. The students also suggested plausible solutions or nominated experts in the field, who might be able to address each problem.

Turn sees poverty and homelessness as urgent national problems. “Through my volunteer work, I have seen the pain and destruction that homelessness and poverty can cause,” said Turn.  “I have also seen organizations that enable the needy to help themselves. I believe that our nation can unite to find a permanent solution to this problem.”

“All of us here at the Honors College are delighted that Christina has received this impressive recognition.  Each year, our incoming students arrive with exciting achievements and incredible experiences.  Christina is certainly living up to this high standard,” said Dr. Jeffrey Buller, dean of FAU’s Wilkes Honors College.
