FAU’s University Club Receives $50,000 Gift from Ziegfeld Girls of Florida
BOCA RATON, FL (February 17, 2009) – A gift in the amount of $50,000 was given to the University Club of Florida Atlantic University from the Ziegfeld Girls of Florida, Inc. Members of the Ziegfeld Girls were honored for their generosity at a recent University Club gathering held at FAU’s Eleanor R. Baldwin House. The Ziegfeld gift will be used, as needed, to help FAU’s colleges and students.
Established more than 25 years ago, the Ziegfeld Girls of Florida is a not-for-profit, philanthropic organization. Comprised of women ages 50 and up, the Ziegfeld Girls of Florida pays homage to long-admired Ziegfeld showgirls of the past. With a membership comprised of former professional dancers, singers, comediennes and beauty pageant contestants, the club has performed their special “vaudeville show with glamour” at venues around the area. All proceeds from these performances have been donated to community organizations and institutions. Past recipients of gifts from the Ziegfeld Girls include Hospice, the Salvation Army and Hearts and Hope, Inc.
Today, there are more than 50 entertainers in the Ziegfeld Girls of Florida. Audrey Mize, a former showgirl who danced in London and the United States, serves as the club’s president. One of the club’s members, Gloria Meeker, worked with the choreographer Bob Fosse and danced with film icon Fred Astaire. At 87, Meeker is still dancing. Former Ziegfeld Girls of Florida choreographer Cathy Dooley, has formed THE ORIGINAL FLORIDA FOLLIES™. This group performs frequently in South Florida.
“We are here to address anything in the community where there is a need,” said Mize. “We all have our own histories, but our club allows us to give something back.
We are delighted to have been able to help students at FAU through our gift to the University Club.”
