FAU’s University Club to Hold Annual Fundraiser

Arthur Jaffe, Marianne Haycook and Jan Jessup Named Honorary Chairs

BOCA RATON, FL – (February 11, 2009) - A brunch and silent auction to benefit the Florida Atlantic University Libraries as well as the University’s scholarship programs is being planned by members of the University Club of the Florida Atlantic University Foundation, Inc. This year the University Club’s annual fundraiser, which has been named “Beyond Imagination,” will be held at the Boca West Country Club on Sunday, March 15, at 11 a.m. Keyboardist Paul Anthony will provide music for dining and dancing.

“We hope this fundraiser will also increase public awareness of FAU’s vast array of programs – programs that broaden the imagination and mind,” said Alene Brewer, event co-chair and past University Club president. Joining Brewer as event co-chair is Rana Vitha.

Arthur Jaffe, Marianne Haycook and Jan Amis Jessup have been named honorary event chairs. All three individuals are long-time patrons of the arts and supporters of FAU.

As the founder and curator of the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Center for Book Arts, Jaffe is highly respected by his colleagues at FAU Libraries and by peers at libraries throughout the country. The Jaffe center, home to the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Collection: Books as Aesthetic Objects, is located in the S.E. Wimberly Library on the Boca Raton campus. Jaffe’s association with FAU began in the mid 1990s when he spearheaded the organization of the library’s sizeable Judaic collection. In 1998, Jaffe donated his distinguished personal collection of artist’s books to the library, and in 2007, the enlarged Jaffe center opened its doors to the public. At age 88, Jaffe continues his busy lifestyle. Although he can be found most days at work on the library’s third floor, Jaffe has numerous other interests as well. A vibrant philanthropic force in the community, Jaffe remains committed to the arts, Jewish organizations and social causes.

“I never dreamed that my lifelong love of artist’s books would be the impetus for a collection of this significance,” said Jaffe. “The Jaffe center supports so many academic programs at FAU – art, writing, poetry, graphic design, art history, language, even computer engineering. I am most grateful to the University Club for so generously doing its share to sustain the FAU Libraries and its collections.”

Marianne Haycook ’95 is a former marketing and customer service assistant vice president with BellSouth’s nine-state region and managing director in their international division. During her professional years, Haycook divided her time between Lighthouse Point and BellSouth’s headquarters in Atlanta. In addition to holding a degree in business from Nova Southeastern University, Haycook earned separate undergraduate degrees in painting and art history from FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters. In 2001, Haycook saw books from Jaffe’s collection and was so impressed by the art form that she enrolled in graduate courses in book arts at Florida International University. Today she is an exhibiting and prize-winning book artist.

“I am delighted to be one of the event’s honorary co-chairs,” said Haycook. “I think that what the University Club does for scholarships and for the FAU Libraries is wonderful. This club’s generosity has helped set FAU Libraries apart from its less progressive competition.”

Jan Jessup has been a member of the University Club for the past four years. A native of Wisconsin, Jessup spent much of her life in Minneapolis. Earning a degree in journalism, Jessup became city editor of a weekly newspaper in Minneapolis. During Jessup’s career, and following her move to Boca Raton 35 years ago, she has served as president and a member of the boards of directors of many arts organizations, nationally and locally.   Currently, she is a member of the President’s Council of the League of American Orchestras in New York.   Jessup is also a board member of the Symphony of Americas in Fort Lauderdale and a board member of the Harid Conservatory in Boca Raton.   Jessup recently retired from the board of the Florida Grand Opera. Her name is listed in Who’s Who in America and other publications.

“This library is a rich resource to students and appreciators of art and music,” said Jessup. “The Jaffe collection is truly ‘beyond imagination.’   It is awesome how compelling the books are. When I am at the center, I don’t want to leave! I am so grateful to be an honorary chair of this event, and to be able to share my appreciation of the Jaffe center with many of my friends and colleagues.”

Craig and Lisa Swill have been named event honorary advisers. The Swills are best associated with the South Florida Media Group, where Craig Swill serves as CEO. The company publishes the Boca Raton News, Our Town News, Senior News, Atlantic Ave Magazine, FAU’s University Press and In The Biz Magazine. Prior to entering the publishing business, Craig Swill was a partner in an investment banking firm in New York City. Lisa Swill previously had a 10-year career with Atlantic Records, a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc. in New York City where she was vice president of human resources.

“We are delighted to have these outstanding community leaders as part of our annual fundraiser,” said Marlis Hadeed, University Club president. “I am certain their input will prove invaluable as we strive to make this year’s event the most successful ever.”

“Beyond Imagination” is open to the public. For information or to purchase tickets, contact Annette Sisti at 561-297-3044 or asisti1@fau.edu.
