FAU Peaceful Mind/Peaceful World Workshops

BOCA RATON (February 29, 2008) - Florida Atlantic University’s 2008 Peaceful Mind/Peaceful World outreach series, “The Compassionate Universe,” continues on Saturday, March 8 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with a workshop on Inner Peace/Outer Peace led by Jill Bormann, Ph.D., R.N., of the VA San Diego Healthcare System and San Diego State University.   Bormann teaches methods for cultivating calm, attention and compassion, focusing on a peaceful mind as a step towards building a peaceful and environmentally sustainable world.

Bormann’s research on methods for relieving stress in veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder was recognized in the Journal of Advanced Nursing and has been supported by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health.   She will be introducing the workshop participants to a range of techniques for creating calm and finding peace in everyday life and during crisis.

Participants will receive Eknath Easwaran’s book “The Compassionate Universe:   The Power of the Individual to Heal the Environment.”   The workshop will take place in the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing Building on FAU’s Boca Raton campus.   There is a fee of $10, and pre-registration is required; register at www.fau.edu/peacefulmind.

There will be a follow-up session on Saturday, March 29 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in which participants will come together again   to explore how these practices have affected their daily lives.   The follow-up workshop will take place in the same location and is free to participants in the March 8 workshop, and $5 to others.

Peace Studies is an academic program in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters offering a multidisciplinary education in peace and conflict resolution through classes as well as scholarly lectures open to the public (www.fau.edu/peacestudies).   The Peaceful Mind/Peaceful World series is a community outreach initiative of the program, sponsored by the Schmidt Family Foundation, with the support of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.
