FAU Presents Holocaust and Judaic Studies Lecture

            BOCA RATON, FL (February 27, 2008)   The May Smith Lecture Series on Post-Holocaust Christian Jewish Dialogue and The Raddock Family Eminent Scholar Chair in Holocaust Studies in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at Florida Atlantic University present “Redeeming Sacred Texts from their Sacrilegious Uses,” a lecture by Mary C. Boys.   The lecture will take place on Monday, March 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Live Oak Pavilion in the Student Union on the FAU Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road.   It is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required.

            Boys has been the Skinner and McAlpin Professor of Practical Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York since 1994. She also serves as an adjunct faculty member of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America and Teachers College, Columbia University. Prior to Boys’ present appointment, she served for 17 years on the faculty of Boston College.

Boys has delivered many lectures, and participated in numerous workshops and panel discussions over the course of her career.   In 2004, these venues provided a channel to address the controversy over Mel Gibson’s film, The Passion of The Christ. Amid the media frenzy, Boys gave numerous radio, television and newspaper interviews, including interviews with the New York Times, Newsweek and U.S. News and World Report, tapings for National Public Radio and live interviews on many other radio stations. She appeared on PBS, the Today Show, News Night and CNN.

Boys is the author of five books: Biblical Interpretation in Religious Education (1980), Educating in Faith: Maps and Visions (1989), Jewish-Christian Dialogue: One Woman’s Experience (1997), Has God Only One Blessing? Judaism as a Source of Christian Self-Understanding (2000), and a recently published. work, co-authored with Sara S. Lee of Hebrew Union College, Christians and Jews in Dialogue: Learning in the Presence of the Other (2006).
