Five FAU Graduates Named Outstanding First Year Teacher for 2010-11 in St. Lucie County

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (January 20, 2011) - Five Florida Atlantic University elementary education graduates were recently named Outstanding First Year Teachers for their respective schools by the St. Lucie County School District. These teachers include:

  • Megan Schroeder, 3 rd grade teacher at Fairlawn Elementary Magnet School, Fall 2009 FAU graduate

  • Carmela Innamarato, kindergarten teacher at Windmill Point Elementary School, Spring 2010 FAU graduate

  • Julie Caiazzo, 2 nd grade teacher at Oak Hammock K-8 School, Fall 2009 FAU graduate

  • Chris Calvo, 3 rd grade teacher at West Gate K-8 School, Fall 2009 FAU graduate

  • Janessa Harden, 5 th grade teacher at Allapattah Flats K-8 School, Fall 2009 FAU graduate

The district’s Outstanding First Year Teacher award program recognizes first year teachers who have done an outstanding job in their first year of teaching.  The award is based on instructional skills, interaction with students, interaction with faculty/staff, and interaction with parents and the community. A total of 31 outstanding first year teachers were selected throughout the district.  An overall winner will be named at the “Night of the Stars” awards ceremony on Saturday, February 26 at Fort Pierce Central High school.

            “FAU’s College of Education maintains a vibrant partnership with St. Lucie County Schools that helps prepare the district’s future teachers. Evidence of this effective partnership is reflected by five FAU graduates being selected as their school’s Outstanding First Year Teacher,” said Eliah Watlington, Ed.D., associate dean of assessment and northern campuses for the College. “The faculty congratulates these award recipients, and we thank these graduates and all other FAU teaching graduates for the work they are doing to impact student performance.”

FAU’s comprehensive education programs give graduates an edge in an increasingly competitive workforce, which is evidenced in a 97 percent employer satisfaction rate among alumni. The Treasure Coast campus offers the bachelor’s degree in elementary education with ESOL endorsement. Students in this program are fully-prepared and eligible for professional state teacher certification upon graduation.Master’s degrees also are offered in reading, counselor education and the “K-12 School Leaders” and “Adult and Community Education” tracks in educational leadership.All programs are led by distinguished faculty members holding the highest degrees in their fields of study.Financial aid and scholarship opportunities are available.

Now celebrating 46 years of commitment to the future of K-12 education, the College successfully maintains accreditation by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and Southern Association of Colleges & Schools (SACS).All certification programs are approved by the Florida Department of Education.
