FAU Jupiter Presents David Reynolds to Discuss 'Andrew Jackson: Hero or Villain?'

Judy and Donald Smith Visiting Scholar to Lecture to Lifelong Learning Society and MacArthur Campus Students

JUPITER, FL (January 8, 2009) - Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur campus will present a lecture by Dr. David Reynolds on Thursday, January 15 at 7 p.m. The lecture, “Andrew Jackson: Hero or Villain?” is free and open to the public, and will take place in the Lifelong Learning Society complex at FAU, 5353 Parkside Drive, Jupiter.

Reynolds, a professor of English and American studies at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, recently published Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson, and is the author or editor of six other books about American culture and history.  Reynolds’ topics will include Jackson’s rise to fame in 1815 at the Battle of New Orleans, Jackson’s two presidential terms and his policy regarding the Trail of Tears.

Reynolds is a regular contributor to the “New York Times Book Review.” His book, John Brown, Abolitionist: The Man Who Killed Slavery, Sparked Civil War, and Seeded Civil Rights, won the Gustavus Myers Outstanding Book Award and, according to “Publisher’s Launch,” was “the most widely reviewed in America in major periodicals.”

Through the generosity of two Lifelong Learning Society members, the Judy and Donald Smith Visiting Scholar program was established.  This year, a committee comprised of faculty from the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters and the Wilkes Honors College selected Reynolds to be the second speaker for the program.

In addition to his presentation on January 15, Reynolds will also present a lecture to an upper division history class.  He will also speak at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College weekly forum.

For more information or to reserve a free ticket to the lecture, contact the Lifelong Learning Society at 561-799-8667 or 561-799-8547.
