Florida Atlantic University's Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing recently received two gifts totaling $300,000 from local philanthropist, business owner and nurse, Christine E. Lynn. A $100,000 gift will support an endowed scholarship fund for students who intend to work at Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The $200,000 gift will support the College's faculty talent retention fund, which assists in retaining the best and brightest faculty.

Florida Atlantic University has received a $25,000 grant from The Veterans Trust, a nonprofit grant-making organization based in Fort Lauderdale. The grant is designated to assist returning military veterans at Florida Atlantic University with obtaining support and services they need to succeed. The Veterans Trust established this new grant program to create a functional model for veteran reintegration that can be replicated on other university campuses across the country.

The historical fiction will be brought to life by the author's son, Rick Smith, on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 5 p.m., when he brings his multimedia show "Florida is a Land Remembered" to FAU's Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI).

While considered a delicacy in some parts of the world, snails have found a more intriguing use to scientists and the medical profession offering a plethora of research possibilities. Cone snails are marine mollusks, just as conch, octopi and squid, but they capture their prey using venom. This venom is an extraordinary complex mixture of compounds with medicinal properties. Frank Marí, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in FAU's Charles E. Schmidt College of Science at Florida Atlantic University, has focused his research on cone snail venom and has just published a study in the current issue of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
