What are Consultation Services?
FAU Counseling and Psychological Services is committed to promoting an atmosphere at FAU which is conducive to the well-being, personal growth, and psychological health of each of its students. To this end, our staff of counselors and psychologists is available as consultants to assist you in your role as administrator, teacher, advisor, counselor and/or leader of students. Consultation involves a collegial relationship in which the consultant(s) deal exclusively with your work-related or student service issues, not your personal concerns. Services are available to any academic department or administrative unit, as well as any staff, faculty, or student organization. Individuals – staff, faculty, or students – may also request services.
FAU counseling center staff offer faculty and staff the opportunity to talk with a counselor regarding concerns they may have about an FAU student. Often faculty and staff are in a good position to positively influence a student and encourage her/him to seek help. As consultants, our role is to help you determine the best course of action for addressing your concern. We accomplish this by discussing your concerns and assisting in the formulation of specific ways in which you can help.
The CAPS Liaison Program
The CAPS Liaison Program was designed to meet the needs of our FAU community. Each of our counselors is the point of contact for each college and selected community services; thus increasing the access of our services and providing necessary information on education and prevention.

Issues to consider:
You can discuss your concerns with the student and listen for his/her response. Talking about a problem or labeling a crisis does not make it worse. On the contrary, it is the first step to resolving it. If you are referring a student to us, some students find it comforting to call from your office. FAU Counseling Services provides crisis intervention for students who are experiencing a mental health crisis. During normal working hours, students may walk in or call and request a same day appointment to discuss urgent situations.
Training for Faculty and Staff:
FAU has implemented an online, interactive 45-minute training called Kognito Interactive for faculty and staff to learn about the common indicators or student distress, disruptive behaviors and how to best approach at-risk students for referral to the appropriate office. Please log on to MyFAU, click the faculty or staff tab and look for the At-Risk program to participate in this FREE training.
How Do I Request Consultation Services?
If you are requesting a consultation, call the FAU Counseling Center and ask to speak to the counselor who is currently on-call for such services. Call (561) 297-3540 during regular office hours (8:00 – 5:00 Monday through Friday). You may call after hours if the student’s crisis is serious and represents an immediate emergency, and your call will be returned as soon as possible.
If you are requesting educational/training, program, or organizational consultation services, or if you would like to just learn more about these services, contact our Outreach Coordinator, Marisol Blanco, Psy.D. or email Dr. Blanco at firstname.lastname@example.org, to arrange an initial appointment to discuss your specific needs, the appropriateness of consultation services, and how these services might be provided. If both parties agree that consultation is appropriate, you and/or your organization will meet with FAU Counseling Center staff members who will provide consultation services to work out the specific details of that service.
