The Public Communication Sequence emphasizes the strategic role that symbol systems play in constructing meaning in a fast-changing, information-based, culturally diverse world. Courses examine how meaning informs and persuades individuals, introduce students to the history and theories of how communication operates in societies, and analyze the role of symbols in culture. The goal of the sequence is for students to demonstrate a high level of oral and written communication, critical thinking, analytical, problem-solving and nonverbal, and conflict mediation skills. These skills are applicable to personal relationships and are highly marketable in virtually every area of the nonprofit and business worlds. The sequence also prepares students for graduate studies in a broad range of educational disciplines, for example, rhetoric, communication, and law.
