About Our Workshops

FAU’s Writing Center will host workshops on common writing issues throughout each semester including grammar, citation, developing a thesis, and working with academic readings, The workshops, led by certified writing center staff, provide a positive and dynamic forum for instruction beyond the classroom. These workshops last approximately one hour. They begin with 15 – 20 minutes of instruction and follow with 30 minutes of guided practice and application of lessons.  Workshops are free and open to all members of the FAU community.

Occasionally, the Writing Center will also offer creative writing workshops. The basic goals of these workshops are to help participants form and improve a lexicon of craft terms as well as teach them how to implement such principles within their own work.  When discussing fiction in a workshop environment, it is essential to approach each piece from a position of craft. This helps to steer the discussion away from general, nonspecific comments and towards concrete observations. Writers who engage in the discussion also benefit, as they will gain strategies for making choices when to use these elements in their own work. Workshops are not lecture-based. Rather, they operate as a decentered, accessible discussion that engenders conversations.  Workshops are limited to eight writers.  Meeting times are generally 60-minutes per week for a two consecutive Wednesday evenings with four writers reading five minutes of material each session. Discussions begin with the opening comments from participants. These comments will be focused or redirected toward a larger understanding of the students’ work from the perspective of craft.
