South Florida Index

A Conference hosted by the John M. DeGrove Eminent Scholar Chair
May 15, 2012

Major metropolitan regions across the globe have recognized that thinking, planning, and cooperating on a regional scale is necessary to successfully, and sustainably, compete in the globalized world of the 21st century. But South Florida has remained fragmented, without a single, impartial voice to guide the region towards sustainable success.

As the conclusive response to Rethinking Planning in Florida, the 2011-2012 lecture series by FAU’s School of Urban & Regional Planning and John M. DeGrove Eminent Scholar, The South Florida Index: Launching a Guide to Sustainable Regional Success brought together leaders from South Florida’s public and private sectors to discuss what a comprehensive regional planning entity should look like, who should be involved, and what it will take for it to be successful.

The conference also examined successful regional guides from across the country that have addressed the same issues that South Florida faces today, highlighted by keynote speaker Randy Blankenhorn, executive director of the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning.

And finally, the conference concluded with the official launching of the South Florida Index, marking the first step towards establishing comprehensive and impartial regional planning leadership in South Florida.
