MURP Specializations

The specializations permit advanced study in planning subfields. Specializations are offered in:

  • Environmental and Land Use Planning
  • Housing, Community, and Economic Development
  • Sustainable Urban Design
  • Transportation Planning

Each of the four specializations consists of 4 courses (12 credit hours) designed to provide students with a foundation in the tools and methods needed to be an effective planner in the selected subfield. Each specialization has two (2) required foundational courses, as well as two (2) additional courses from a list of approved electives. Students also have the option of tailoring their own specialization with the approval of the program coordinator.

Environmental and Land Use Planning

The Environmental and Land Use Planning specialization is for students intending to acquire: knowledge about pressing environmental and land use issues and the interactions between natural and human environments; methodological approaches that help inform appropriate strategies for addressing environmental and land use issues at multiple scales; and skills to evaluate and create policies and plans that lead to sustainable and resilient communities. Students will also learn about local, state and federal policies that guide your work in planning and decision-making. The specialization caters to students who wish to work in governmental agencies, private firms and non-governmental organizations on issues of local, regional and national significance involving sustainability, land use, environmental protection, coastal resilience, hazard mitigation, and climate change adaptation.

Housing, Community, and Economic Development

The stability and resilience of neighborhoods and communities rely on vibrant economic and housing activities. By engaging in community-based planning projects and public-private partnerships the Housing, Community, and Economic Development specialization introduces students to how housing, real estate, and economic activities are integrated to improve the socioeconomic capital of communities. Students will learn various methods analyzing the housing and economic conditions and apply different strategies reshaping the urban development process. Students will be introduced to policies and theories of community and economic development. The specialization offers opportunities for students to focus on real estate development, urban economics, urban development finance, community planning, and housing studies. The specialization is for students who wish to work for governments, business organizations, community development agencies and organizations, and other non-profit and for-profit agencies in housing and community development.

Sustainable Urban Design

The Sustainable Urban Design specialization is an inter-disciplinary specialization that combines planning and design of the built environment professions. It provides students with knowledge and skills needed for sustainable urban design. Sustainable Urban Design is about making places functional, attractive and sustainable. Particular attention is also paid to making connections between people and places; managing public spaces that enhance the quality of public life; environmental stewardship; understanding both processes and products of designing and shaping urban areas; understanding the relationships between movement and urban form; and linkages between nature, culture, society, politics, economics, and the built fabrics.

Transportation Planning

The Transportation Planning specialization is designed to provide students with a foundation in the tools and methods needed to be an effective transportation planner, as well as an understanding of the broader relationship between transportation and larger planning and societal objectives. Students will learn about policy and regulatory mechanisms that direct transportation investments at the federal, state, and local levels, as well as the techniques used for planning transportation infrastructure, including long-range transportation planning, travel demand modeling, site planning, and traffic impact analysis, among others. Particular attention is given to the planning and programming of “sustainable” transportation infrastructure, including transit, walking, and cycling.
