Area of Specialization:
Communication & community building
Shara Toursh Pavlow specializes in the role of communication in building resilient communities. She teaches classes on communication and community organizing, public participation and engagement, constructive conflict, small group processes, organizational communication, and human communication theory. Her research interests focus on the role of boundary crossing individuals in the construction of community networks.
For the past four years, Dr. Pavlow directed the FAU Community Conversation Corps, an AmeriCorps academic service learning program in which students learned community organizing and then applied their knowledge with more than 40,000 hours of volunteer service to 75 not-for-profit agencies in the tri-county region.
Dr. Pavlow comes to academia after a long career managing health and social services in South Florida. She served as chief executive and chief operating officers at five local organizations and led the governor's effort to expand health insurance coverage. Building on these experiences, she strives to merge theoretical learning with student analyses for real world applications.
