Florida Atlantic University now has a chapter of Alpha Phi Sigma, the national honorary society for criminal justice. Membership in Alpha Phi Sigma requires the completion of at least forty credits, with at minimum of four criminal justice courses. An overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.25 GPA in criminal justice courses taken is also required. Membership provides recognition of scholastic achievement, creates opportunities for service to the community and the criminal justice profession and frequently enhances opportunity for future employment by including membership information on a resume. Alpha Phi Sigma also holds an annual convention and job fair in conjunction with the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences (ACJS). which is open to all active members.
The FAU Criminal Justice Club, which meets in conjunction with Alpha Phi Sigma, was founded to bring students together who share an interest in the workings of the criminal justice system. Membership requires a overall GPA of 2.0 (2.5 for officers) and is NOT restricted to criminal justice majors. Our members include students who are considering a career in law enforcement, corrections, probation and parole, juvenile justice, as well as careers as attorneys and educators. Still others simply have an interest in these areas and are unsure of their future professional goals.
Both organizations are involved in a number of community service events, and there are volunteer programs with the FAU police department, field trips to corrections and law enforcement facilities, seminars with federal, state and local enforcement agencies and an annual job fair. Barbecues and other social events are also featured. Notices announcing meetings will be posted around the Social Science Building at the Boca Raton campus, and on the bulletin board outside the criminal justice department office, SO room 383. Your participation in these organizations will provide your school and community with needed services and will provide you with new friends and insights to professions in the criminal justice field. Get involved and come check us out! You won't regret it!
