Movement of Animals Within the University

  1. Animal may only be moved from their holding area according to the protocol
    1. The protocol should state what room they may be moved to
    2. The protocol does state how they should be moved
  2. Census
    1. The census form has to reflect when the animal is moved both out and returned
  3. Animal movement from room to room within the same building
    1. The animal should be put into a clean cage with a filter top
    2. The cage should be covered so that no one can see the animal or cage
    3. The animal and any animal related equipment should only go up and down the freight elevator when moved in the Biomedical or Behavioral Science buildings
    4. If a cart is used, the same procedure applies as above for the animals
      1. The cart has to be sprayed with disinfectant as it comes off the elevator
            a.  The wheels and the area where the cages are placed
      2. The bottom of the cages have to sprayed
      3. It takes 10 minutes for the disinfectant to work so the cart has to stay at the elevator until 10 minutes after spraying it.
    5. Upon return to the room, the animal should be transferred to a clean cage and the dirty cage put where dirty cages are stored (normally in the dirty cage wash room).
  4. Animal movement from building to building
    1. The same procedures as above for the cages and animals
    2. In addition, normally only the Veterinary Services staff may transport the animals from building to building.  If schedule or staffing does not permit transport on a timely basis, then the PI may transport the animal with Veterinary Services approval.
    3. The animals will be placed in a “Coleman” cooler immediately before transport and opened immediate upon arrival at the new room.
      1. The cooler will be sprayed down the same as the cage above.
    4. The cooler will normally be transported in the Veterinary Services’ vehicle
      1. The vehicle will be started and the temperature adjusted to maintain between 64 and 75 degrees inside the vehicle prior to putting the animals in the vehicle.
      2. The vehicle will go immediately to the new building without any stops or delays.
      3. The vehicle will be sanitized before and after each use.
