GRADUATE BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS PROGRAM

The Graduate Business Communications Program (GBCP) is an integral part of the College of Business' Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Accounting (MAcct) and Master of Taxation (MTAX) degrees.  The GBCP was designed not only to provide students with acquired behaviors (written, presentational, and interpersonal skills introduced, practiced, and proficiently demonstrated within the communications course) but, even more importantly, to provide students with maintained behaviors (skills reinforced through feedback within the environment).  Towards this end, students taking GEB 6215 (Graduate Business Communication Applications) cannot receive a satisfactory grade until they have demonstrated the acquired skills within their content courses.

The American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) has recognized the GBCP as being "a creative and substantive program."  The GBCP has been nationally recognized for being more successful than most business communication courses because it integrates with the core curriculum.  Historically, business communication courses have been notoriously unsuccessful: While students have demonstrated effective communication skills within the communication course, they have not transferred those skills to other courses.  In order for those skills to be transferred, the students must see the relevance of applying them within each discipline.  Consequently, the implementation strategy at FAU is to reinforce the communication skills by having graded writing and speaking assignments consistent with the GBCP requirements as part of the required discipline-specific courses for the MBA students (ISM 6026, FIN 6806, ACG 6085, MAN 6937 and MAR 6815)  the Accounting Theory course (ACG 6135) for the MAcct, and the Tax Concepts course (TAX 6025) for the MTAX students.
