FAU Art Galleries to Host Family Art Day

BOCA RATON, Fla. (January 28, 2013) - FAU’s University Galleries in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will host Family Art Day to highlight its current exhibitions, “POUR” and “Papercuts,” on Saturday, Feb. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m. This free family event will be presented at the Schmidt Center Gallery, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus, and is open to the public.

Family Art Day will include art stations where children and families can create works of art to take home. These hands-on activities will explore the process of pouring paint as presented in the “POUR” exhibition, and the manipulation of paper as seen in the “Papercuts” exhibition. FAU art students will lead short informative tours of both exhibitions. The goal for the event is to engage audiences in the ideas and techniques in contemporary art making by inspiring visitors to create works of art together as families, connecting their creative art making to their experience in the galleries.

The “Pour” exhibition, co-curated by Carol Prusa and Elisabeth Condon, painters and art professors at FAU and University of South Florida respectively, features 24 paintings that present the literal pouring of paint on a surface through a variety of physical methods and conceptual strategies. The practice of pouring paint became popularly known in works by mid-20th century American abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock and was subsequently refined in the 1970s in what is called "color field" painting.

The artists featured in “Papercuts” bring a broad range of international perspectives to the contemporary art of paper cutting. They manipulate, bend and cut paper, creating unique pieces ranging from visual narratives to complex sculptural abstractions. Their works are bold statements that celebrate nuance, handmade craft, and a process that traces its origins back to sixth century China. Light, shadow and color play key roles, transforming this ancient technique into a dynamism filled with delicate illusions.

University Galleries programs are supported in part by the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County, R.A. Ritter Foundation, Beatrice Cummings Mayer and individual contributors. Museum Education programs are made possible by the Kaye Endowment for Arts Integration. “Papercuts” is sponsored in part by VCUarts, School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, and “POUR” is made possible in part by a grant from The David and Francie Horvitz Family Foundation.

University Galleries are open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays, from 1 to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m. Group and class tours are welcome during public hours, as well as at other times scheduled by appointment. For more information, call 561-297-2661 or visit fau.edu/galleries.
