FAU Receives ‘2011 Outstanding State of Florida University of the Year Award’ from Office of Supplier Diversity
BOCA RATON, FL (December 20, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University recently received the “2011 Outstanding State of Florida University of the Year Award” from the Florida’s Office of Supplier Diversity at the 2011 Florida Matchmaker Conference & Trade Show in Lake Buena Vista. The event links small business owners with corporations and state and local government purchasing officials to drive economic development.
FAU was highlighted for increasing the purchase of commodities, architecture and engineering, construction and general services from minority businesses certified by the State of Florida by 73 percent in one year.
“The continuous growth of FAU’s small- and minority-business purchasing program is credit to our purchasing operation and buying staff,” said Anthony Montero, associate director of purchasing for FAU. “Together, we have created an atmosphere of support for Florida’s business community and actively encourage small, minority-, woman- and veteran-owned business enterprises to participate in FAU’s purchasing programs.”
For the fiscal year 2009-10, FAU purchased $13.3 million of goods and services from certified and non-certified minority businesses of which $7.6 million came from state-certified businesses. For the fiscal year 2010-11, FAU purchased $16.8 million from certified and non-certified minority businesses. Purchases from state-certified businesses represented $13.2 million with $500,000 from the recently added classification, veteran-owned businesses.
Professionals from FAU’s purchasing department develop and implement an annual small business participation plan, as well as attend Matchmaker conferences and community outreach events, provide one-on-one counseling to vendors, and coordinate bid advertising. Vendors are strongly encouraged to register with the State of Florida and to obtain their minority certification from the Office of Supplier Diversity.
“By reaching out to new and emerging vendors and involving them in our acquisition program, FAU is committed to assist minority businesses by removing unnecessary burdens in University procurements,” said Montero.
