FAU to Celebrate 2011 Fall Commencement

BOCA RATON, FL (December 5, 2011) – Florida Atlantic University will confer more than 2,300 degrees on Thursday, December 8 and Friday, December 9.  The ceremonies are scheduled for 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Thursday, and 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, in the Carole and Barry Kaye Auditorium, located in FAU’s Student Union, 777 Glades Road.  These students will join more than 123,000 who have graduated from FAU since the University was established 50 years ago. This year’s commencement marks the 102nd ceremony for the University, which is celebrating its 50thanniversary this year.

On December 8, at 9 a.m., FAU will honor Nancy Blosser and Shawn Friedkin with the President’s Distinguished Service Medallion. Blosser became a charter member of the FAU Board of Trustees in 2001 by appointment of former Florida Governor Jeb Bush. Over the past 10 years, she held leadership positions on the board that included chair, vice chair, chair of the audit and finance committee, and chair of the strategic planning committee. Blosser also was a member of the advisory board of FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and now serves as a member of the advisory board of the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine.

Friedkin founded Stand Among Friends (SAF), a Boca Raton-based nonprofit organization based in FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. SAF has grown into a multi-faceted resource center and direct service provider for people with disabilities. 

Ralph de La Vega, president and CEO of AT&T Mobility & Consumer Markets and FAU alumnus, will be awarded with an honorary doctorate from the College of Business in the Thursday ceremony at 1 p.m.  Dr. Michael Posner, professor emeritus at the University of Oregon and adjunct professor of psychology in psychiatry at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, also will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine on Friday at 1 p.m.
