FAU’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center Holds Sixth Annual Walk
BOCA RATON, FL (July 22, 2011) – The Caring Hearts Auxiliary of Florida Atlantic University’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center's Sixth Annual Walk-in-the-Mall will be held November 6, at 9 a.m. inside Town Center at Boca Raton. Last year’s "black tie" walk set a record year with more than 400 walkers raising $180,000, with the generous donations of Presenting Sponsor Bobby Campbell and Honorary Chair Christine E. Lynn.
This year's theme will be a new twist – “Steppin' to the Oldies, Bobby Socks Optional!” Magic 102.7 will once again be present, playing the best oldies music for all to enjoy. Co-chairs include Caring Hearts Auxiliary board members Debbie Gonzalez and Morgan Green and auxiliary members Kelli-Ann Bloechinger and Schuyler Thompson. The walk affair benefits scholarships to day center participants and caregiver support programs.
“It’s hard to believe how much this event has grown in five years. From 65 walkers in the first year to 400 walkers last year, our funds this year alone have grown by 75 percent,” said Green. “We are proud of the fact that 90 percent of the monies raised for the event go directly back to the Center, and our costs are under 10 percent. We feel confident we will reach our goal of $250,000 this year.”
The Memory and Wellness Center, located on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, is part of FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and averages 16,000 visits each year, and one-third of the visitors are caregivers who have found respite. The center offers a wide range of services and programs to individuals with mild to moderate memory disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Visits start with a comprehensive memory evaluation that often helps diagnose a memory disorder and begin a treatment plan with a patient’s physician.
The day center provides an active and secure place for families to bring spouses or parents who are experiencing memory loss, and the caregiver support programs have a positive impact on life at home.
“We are so appreciative of the support we received from the committee, walkers and sponsors that enables the center to continue state-of-the art services to families living with memory disorders,” said Dr. Kathleen Valentine, director of the center. “Funds raised go directly to scholarships and caregiver support programs. Like many not-for-profit health care organizations, we are continually forced to do more with less. Each dollar counts.”
