FAU Presents a Variety of Spring Concerts

  BOCA RATON, Fla. (April 1, 2013) –Florida Atlantic University’s Department of Music in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present a variety of concerts this Spring. All concerts take place in the University Theatre, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus. No reservations are required, and a donation of $10 is requested at the door.

On Thursday, April 11 at 7 p.m., The University Symphony Band, under the direction of Kyle Prescott, will present a concert of exciting musical selections from the standard band repertoire. Then on Saturday, April 13 at 7 p.m., the University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Laura Joella, presents “Tchaikovsky: From Russia with Verve!” This concert highlights Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, heralded as his greatest demonstration of the forces of the orchestra. Benjamin Joella is the featured double bass soloist.

 On Sunday, April 14 at 7 p.m. (note new time), the FAU Chamber Winds and Concert Percussion Ensemble, conducted by Kyle Prescott, will perform Mozart’s masterworks for winds. Prescott also conducts the concert on Wednesday, April 17 at 7 p.m. titled “A Southern Celebration.” In this concert, the FAU Wind Ensemble performs with Joel Puckett, visiting composer, and Elissa Lakofsky, flute. The repertoire features music for winds, including “Shadow of Sirius” and Donald Grantham’s thrilling and compelling “Southern Harmony.”

The final concert weekend for the season includes FAU’s Commercial Music Ensembles with concerts on Thursday. April 18 at 7 p.m., and Friday, April 19 at 7 p.m., presenting eclectic concerts of original compositions and covers from students in the commercial music program. Then, on Saturday, April 20 at 7 p.m., FAU Choral Ensembles perform international composer Michael McGlynn’s specially commissioned work “Flowers, Sunshine and Shadows.” Finally, on Sunday, April 21 at 3 p.m., Neil Bonsanti directs FAU’s Jazz Band and Jazz Combos in a concert of jazz standards and new works for big band.
