FAU Named a ‘Tree Campus USA’ University for Second Year by Arbor Day Foundation

JUPITER, FL (April 25, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University, and more specifically its John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, recently earned Tree Campus USA recognition for 2011 for its dedication to campus forestry management and environmental stewardship. This is the second year the campus has been named with this distinction.

Tree Campus USA is a national program that honors colleges, universities and their leaders for promoting healthy management of their campus forests and for engaging the community in environmental stewardship. Tree Campus USA is a program of the Arbor Day Foundation and is supported by a grant from Toyota.

"This is a wonderful honor for the university," said Eliah Watlington, associate provost for FAU’s northern campuses. “This accomplishment shows FAU’s continued dedication to environmental stewardship on the Jupiter campus.”

FAU met the five core standards of tree care and community engagement in order to receive Tree Campus USA status. The standards include establishing a campus tree advisory committee; evidence of a campus tree-care plan; verification of dedicated annual expenditures on the campus tree-care plan; involvement in an Arbor Day observance; and the institution of a service-learning project aimed at engaging the student body.

“Students throughout the country are passionate about sustainability and community improvement, which makes Florida Atlantic’s emphasis on well-maintained and healthy trees so important,” said John Rosenow, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “By achieving Tree Campus USA recognition, Florida Atlantic University will continue to set an example for other colleges and universities and give students a chance to give back to both their campus community and the community at-large.”

The MacArthur Campus in Jupiter is home to the Robert J. Huckshorn Arboretum, named in honor of FAU’s vice president emeritus and founder of the campus. The arboretum is planted with Florida native plants, including typical species found in pine flatwoods, tropical hardwood hammocks, mixed hardwood swamps and oak hammock.

Each year the campus celebrates Arbor Day with a special program in the arboretum. On Friday, April 27 at 10 a.m., the annual celebration will welcome representatives from the Arbor Day Foundation, who will present FAU with a recognition plaque and a Tree Campus USA flag.
