‘Shades of Green: Music, Memories & Dance’ Event Raises Funds for FAU’s Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center
BOCA RATON, FL (April 5, 2012) – More than 130 guests recently enjoyed “Music, Memories & Dance” at the annual Shades of Green event to benefit the Louis and Anne Green Memory and Wellness Center of the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University. The annual event raised funds to benefit scholarships to Day Center participants and caregiver support programs. Guests enjoyed delicious food and a live auction while being entertained with music and dancing with Dr. J and his band and a wonderful cabaret show featuring Jennifer Sheehan and her pianist.
“The generosity of our guests never ceases to amaze me,” said event chair Holli Rockwell, Caring Hearts Auxiliary board member. “The Caring Hearts Auxiliary members are honored to provide support to those who are experiencing memory loss and their caregivers. We are fortunate to have resources like the Memory and Wellness Center and College of Nursing in our community.”
Held in the garden and three-story atrium of the College of Nursing on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, the event was also co-chaired by Caring Hearts Auxiliary board members Vanessa Boltz and Terry Fedele. The grand sponsor was Marleen Forkas, and Marlaine Smith, Ph.D., dean of the College of Nursing, was the honorary chair. Committee members included Debbie Gonzalez, Morgan Green, Debbie Lindstrom, Kathleen Valentine, Ph.D., R.N., and Lynda Williams.
“The dedication of the Caring Hearts Auxiliary and our supporters is making a difference in the lives of those experiencing memory loss and nurturing and supporting their families is truly amazing,” said Valentine, director of the center. “We welcomed so many wonderful guests this year, including over 20 College of Nursing doctoral students who shared in conversations about the role of the Doctorate in Nursing Practice.”
The Memory and Wellness Center, located on FAU’s Boca Raton campus, is part of FAU’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing and averages 16,000 visits each year. One-third of the visitors are caregivers who have found respite. The Center offers a wide range of services and programs to individuals with mild to moderate memory disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia. Visits start with a comprehensive memory evaluation that often helps diagnose a memory disorder and begin a treatment plan with a patient’s physician. The Day Center provides an active and secure place for families to bring spouses or parents who are experiencing memory loss, and the caregiver support programs have a positive impact on life at home.
