FAU’s Today & Beyond Wellness to Host 21st Annual Wellness Triathlon
BOCA RATON, FL (April 2, 2012) – Florida Atlantic University’s Today and Beyond Wellness within the Division of Student Affairs will host its 21st annual Wellness Triathlon on Sunday, April 15 at 7 a.m. at Spanish River Park, 3001 State Road A1A, Boca Raton. A “Wellness Weekend,” including a participant packet pickup and expo, will take place on Saturday, April 14 from noon to 4:30 p.m. at FAU’s Recreation and Fitness Center, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
“The Wellness Triathlon is a great opportunity for people from the community to learn more about healthy living, and it enables everyone to participate in a fun event,” said Rosemary Dunbar, race director.
Sponsored by Bike America, the triathlon is open to community members of all ages, and includes a quarter-mile ocean swim, a 10-mile bicycle ride and a 3.1-mile run. All revenue generated from the triathlon will be used to support wellness programming for FAU and the local community.
The expo will host free bicycle check-ups and displays of fitness and health-oriented products, with three workshops offered. From noon to 1:15 p.m., beginner tri-athletes may learn from Racheal Woods, one of South Florida’s outstanding tri-athletes, 2002 Ironman master world champion, USAT coach and FAU alumnus. Woods will present tips that to help make a “first race” both enjoyable and successful. Experienced tri-athletes will be able to review swim techniques and other racing skills to improve their performance with Niki Alvarez, FAU swim coach, USAT coach and 2010 FAU Wellness Triathlon women's overall winner. From 3 to 4:30 p.m. Rick Slifkin, USAT Level 1 coach, with more than 20 years of racing experience will present “Make the Bike Work for You.”
Cost for the triathlon is $75 per person for USA Triathlon members or $87 for non-members if registered by Saturday, April 14, and $85 for members or $97 for non-members for those that register the day of the race. Teams consisting of two relay participants cost $135 for members or $171 for non-members if registered by April 14, or $145 for members or $181 for non-members who register the day of the race.
