FAU and BC to Host Community Health and Safety Fair
DAVIE, FL (December 20, 2010) – Florida Atlantic University and Broward College are collaborating with the Town of Davie, State Farm Insurance and Memorial Hospital Pembroke for a joint community health and safety fair. The fair will take place on Saturday, January 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at FAU and BC’s Davie campus, and is free and open to the public.
The fair will feature approximately 50 booths showcasing representatives from local healthcare companies and nonprofits. Mobile units will be on hand to conduct health screenings for adults and children to include blood pressure, cholesterol, HIV testing and EKG screenings. Child immunizations will also be offered; parents are asked to bring up-to-date immunization records. Informational sessions that will take place during the fair will include crime prevention, domestic violence, health issues of black males, victims’ rights and services, bullying, and adult and child nutrition. Other highlights include entertainment by local school and community groups, giveaways, massages, a fire simulation “smoke house,” fingerprinting for children’s identification cards, the Miami Dolphins’ obstacle course and child safety seat inspections, with free seats for individuals who qualify. Children will be treated to popcorn, snow cones, cotton candy and bounce houses.
“We are excited to join with our educational and community partners to bring this event to Davie,” said Carolyn Stewart, Ph.D., FAU’s assistant vice president of community relations for the Broward campuses. “The fair presents an opportunity for our internal and external communities to come together and experience a holistic approach to health and safety within a higher education setting.”
