FAU Creates Graduate College

BOCA RATON, FL (November 14, 2007) – Florida Atlantic University has developed its 10 th college – FAU’s Graduate College.   The new entity, which received Board of Trustees approval today, will provide the expertise and support for effective graduate student recruitment and retention efforts, and the necessary quality control for all aspects of graduate education to grow and prosper at FAU.

“FAU’s potential to grow as a major research university is inextricably linked to its ability to attract and retain outstanding graduate students,” said Dr. John Pritchett, FAU’s provost. “The future of FAU depends upon a strong and vibrant graduate community, with professors and graduate students working together to advance the limits of knowledge and creative activity on all seven campuses.”

FAU’s Graduate College will perform centralized office services for degree-seeking graduate students from admissions to final graduation clearance. It also will present a solid platform for development efforts to provide the additional funds for assistantships, fellowships, recruitment efforts, graduate student teaching and research awards, and faculty mentoring awards.

“With university-wide standards and an increased attention on graduate affairs, our programs will grow in prominence and respect,” said Dr. Barry Rosson, dean of the Graduate College. “The naming of the Graduate College will place graduate education at the heart of the university as a major research institution, and in the process it will increase the image and prestige of the university with not only its future graduate students, but also with its future undergraduate students and its faculty.”

During the past five years, the number of FAU graduate students receiving degrees has increased by 15 percent. In 2006-07, 1,228 students received a graduate degree from FAU, as compared to 1,069 in 2002-03. The number of students receiving doctoral degrees almost doubled from 44 to 83 between 2002 and 2007.
