FAU’s Music Department Presents Two Concerts
BOCA RATON, FL (October 6, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s dep artment of music in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will present two concerts during the weekend of October 16 - 18. Both concerts will take place in the University Theatre on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. Admission is free with a suggested donation of $10.
On Friday, October 16 at 7:30 p.m., the FAU Jazz Band, under the direction of Neal Bonsanti, will present an evening of jazz favorites. The band, which consists of approximately 25 students ranging from freshman to graduate students, will perform big band jazz compositions and arrangements by John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Tom Kubis, Sammy Nestico, Mark Taylor and Gordon Goodwin.
On Sunday, October 18 at 3 p.m., the FAU Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Kyle Prescott, will present “Autumn Bells.” The concert opens with a fanfare by film score composer John Williams called "Sound the Bells." This is followed by a newer work by Eric Whitacre titled "October." Norman Dello Joio's three movement suite "Satiric Dances" will then be conducted by graduate conducting student Daniel Harvey. The FAU Brass Choir, Saxophone Choir and Concert Percussion Ensemble will perform a variety of chamber music selections, and finally, the full wind ensemble will again take the stage for Michael Daugherty's "Bells for Stokowski," a tribute to one of the most influential and controversial conductors of the 20th century, Leopold Stokowski.
