FAU to Co-Host Florida Dance Education Organization Conference

            BOCA RATON, FL (October 4, 2007) – The department of theatre and dance in Florida Atlantic University’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters will co-sponsor the 6 th Annual Florida Dance Education Organization (FDEO) Conference entitled “Exceeding Expectations in Dance.”   The conference will take place Thursday, October 11 through Saturday, October 13 at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach, Florida.   The conference presents over 30 experts in the field of dance with lecture presentations, dance classes and performances on a wide range of topics including ballet, modern, jazz, tap, anatomy, dance science, choreography and more.    The conference is open to the public.   Fee and schedule information may be found at

            Among the lecturers are Sally Sevey Fitt, author of Dance Kinesiology, the textbook used for dance kinesiology courses in more than 80 U.S. colleges and universities.   Fitt retired from the University of Utah in 2001 after serving as professor in the department of modern dance for 25 years.  In 2003, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award  by the Dance Kinesiology Teachers of America.  She also coauthored two additional books, Dance for the Handicapped and Diet for Dancers, as well as authored more than 20 articles and chapters in professional publications.

West African dance and music authority Chuck Davis will also present several master classes. Davis is the founder and artistic director of the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Dance Africa and the African American Dance Ensemble.   He is also listed by the Dance Heritage Coalition as one of the first 100 Irreplaceable Dance Treasures in the United States.  

The conference is sponsored by the department of theatre and dance in FAU’s School of the Arts, the Dreyfoos School of the Arts, BAK Middle School of the Arts and the West Palm Beach Dance/Arts Community.
