FAU’s College of Business Honors Steve Odland, Office Depot Chairman & CEO, with 2007 Business Leader of the Year Award
BOCA RATON, FL (October 2, 2007) - Florida Atlantic University’s Barry Kaye College of Business is hosting the 2007 Business Leader of the Year annual awards breakfast on Tuesday, October 9, 2007 at the Boca Raton Resort & Club. This year’s program celebrates the accomplishments of Steve Odland, Office Depot Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, a leader who has recognized the vital linkage between education and business excellence in Florida and beyond.
“Steve Odland epitomizes the effective leader,” said Dr. J. Dennis Coates, Dean of FAU’s College of Business. “His vision of how to stimulate the resources of business and the talents of individuals has contributed to growth in the economy and well being of the southeast region of Florida.”
The Business Leader of the Year award celebrates the accomplishments of business leaders and their ongoing legacy in improving the overall environment of business. According to FAU, Odland meets the criteria of this award, exhibiting traits which measure effective leadership in business, including vision, innovation and change, knowledge and experience, transparency and integrity, and social responsibility.
Odland joined Office Depot as Chairman & CEO in March 2005. Prior to joining Office Depot, he was Chairman, CEO and President of AutoZone, the nation’s largest auto parts and accessories retailer. Previously, Odland was Chief Operating Officer of Ahold USA, Inc., a leading supermarket retailer on the eastern seaboard. Prior to that, he served as President and CEO for Tops Markets, Inc., one of Ahold's operating companies. Before joining Ahold, Odland served as President of the food service division of Sara Lee Corporation and spent sixteen years at The Quaker Oats Company in various senior management capacities. He is also a Director of General Mills, Inc.
Odland recently served as Chairman of the Business Roundtable’s Corporate Governance Task Force and was named top new CEO in 2002 by Bloomberg Markets Magazine. Odland holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame and a masters degree in management from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
A tribute video will highlight the character and accomplishments of Odland. Other program speakers include FAU President Frank T. Brogan and Dean Dr. J. Dennis Coates. The program’s master of ceremonies will be FAU Trustee Armand Grossman.
Since 1991, FAU’s College of Business has presented the Business Leader of the Year award program, honoring the work of outstanding contributors to the overall business climate of the southeast region of Florida and the state. Steve Odland joins other highly honored recipients of the award, including Ronald Assaf, Alexander Dreyfoos, Jim Moran, Wayne Huizenga, Carl DeSantis, Bud Paxson, Jerry Levin, Pat Moran, Jeb Bush, Alan Levan and others.
