FAU Jupiter’s Lifelong Learning Society Announces Fall 2010 Course Schedule


JUPITER, FL (August 2, 2010) – Florida Atlantic University has announced the Lifelong Learning Society Jupiter course offerings for the Fall 2010 semester, which begin on Monday, October 11.

Taught by FAU professors and distinguished guest lecturers, course offerings include such varied subjects as foreign policy, political science, film, music, art history and literature. The Lifelong Learning Society was established to provide adults of all ages the opportunity to enrich their lives through non-credit, university-level courses with no homework or tests.

Fall courses are held in the Lifelong Learning Society complex and include:

  • “Emerging Third World Superpowers,” taught by Andrew Kahn, a James Madison Fellow in Constitutional Law at Indiana University. This course will compare and contrast established Third World superpowers within the global economy.
  • “The Media: The Inside Story of Press, Presidency and Politics,” taught by S. William Scott, distinguished professor of broadcast journalism and media in FAU’s School of Communication and Multimedia Studies. This course examines how government and business use media.
  • “Hollywood Takes on Florida Authors,” taught by Frank Eberling, an Emmy Award-winning documentary filmmaker. This course will review Florida novels that have been adapted into feature films.
  • “Experiencing Theater with a Critical Eye,” taught by Hap Erstein, freelance theater and film critic for the Palm Beach Post. This course will analyze and discuss merits of local area productions.
  • “Modern Art from 1848-1930,” taught by Dr. Paula Carabell, an assistant professor of art history at FAU. This course examines the major movements and artists of the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries.
  • “Listening to Music with an Educated Ear,” taught by Joe Scott, a professional jazz pianist and orchestrator. This course reviews a variety of musical subjects providing perceptive listening and insight to music theory.
