FAU’s Women’s Studies Center Receives Donation from the Feminist Scholarship Fund
BOCA RATON, FL (August 20, 2009) – Florida Atlantic University’s Women’s Studies Center recently received a donation of $4,000 from the Feminist Scholarship Fund, a South Florida-based organization established to help people in South Florida who are pursuing women’s studies and supporting women’s issues. The donation will provide partial funding for a graduate teaching assistantship in the Women’s Studies Center for the coming school year.
“We are grateful to the Feminist Scholarship Fund for their efforts to support the success of the Center. We look forward to building a long-lasting relationship,” said Josephine Beoku-Betts, interim director of FAU’s Women’s Studies Center. “Due to recent budget cuts, support from organizations such as the Feminist Scholarship Fund are vital to the continuation of the Center. ”
The Feminist Scholarship Fund was founded in 1996, and since then, the organization has given out more than 100 scholarships to women and men who live in South Florida. Ellen Gruneisen, the first scholarship recipient, received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from FAU and is now on the board of the Feminist Scholarship Fund. Other board members include Sheila Jaffe, president of the South Palm Beach County chapter of the National Organization for Women, and Jane Caputi, professor of women’s studies at FAU.
The Women’s Studies Center at FAU was established in 1986. The Center offers graduate and undergraduate degrees. The courses offered explore diversity of class, race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, ability, sexuality and age. Students are prepared for careers in non-profit organizations and institutions that address women and gender issues, and for advanced training in fields such as law, social services and public policy.
