“The Three Sisters” is set in a provincial town in Russia during the late 1800s. It tells the story of the struggles, loves and desires of sisters Masha, Olga and Irina and their hopeless brother Andrei. The sisters put on a show of contentment, but cannot conceal their feelings of despair, anguish and dissatisfaction. The family’s emotional life – calm on the surface, tormented beneath it – mirrors Russian society poised on the brink of social and political upheaval. Chekhov has exposed the frustration of this time period, while still finding moments of humor. “The Three Sisters” is one of Chekhov’s most poignant works, and exposes the human condition and our ability to survive and adapt.
The play will feature the work of both MFA acting students and undergraduates in the Department of Theatre and Dance, and will be directed by guest Director Jana Tift. The production is presented by the School of the Arts in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at FAU. For more information on other School of the Arts events, call 561-297-2977.
