FAU Vice President Kristen Murtaugh Named '2006/07 Community Leader of the Year'
JUPITER, FL (July 27, 2007) – Dr. Kristen Murtaugh, vice president of Florida Atlantic University’s John D. MacArthur Campus in Jupiter, was named “2006/07 Community Leader of the Year” by the North Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce. Murtaugh received her award at the chamber’s annual leadership luncheon, held recently at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens.
“The north Palm Beach County area is proud to salute Kristen as an example of the dynamic leadership that is responsible for the unprecedented growth and success of our community,” said Casey Steinbacher, president and CEO of the chamber.
Murtaugh was appointed vice president of the John D. MacArthur campus in May 2002. Two years ago, she helped lead the University through its strategic planning process. Murtaugh’s organizational skills and ability to bring about collaboration and build consensus resulted in a workable plan which has already made an impact on the way the University operates.
Murtaugh joined FAU in 1992 as associate dean for Credit & Extension Programs in the Division of Continuing Education/Open University. Later, as associate vice president for the Northern Campuses, she played a leading role in the establishment of FAU’s Treasure Coast campus in Port St. Lucie, and she assisted with the expansion of the University’s operations in northern Palm Beach County.
In addition to her dedication on the job, Murtaugh has taken on several leadership roles in the community. This past year, Murtaugh took on the task of leading the United Way of Palm Beach County as 2006/07Campaign Chair. She established a plan to increase participation and recruited other community leaders to assist her, resulting in a record campaign of $15 million.
Murtaugh serves on the boards of the Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition, Lighthouse Center for the Arts, Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center, United Way of Palm Beach County and the North Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce, and is an active participant on projects and committees.
After receiving the “2006/07 Community Leader of the Year” award, Murtaugh said, “I am gratified to accept this award. I believe my involvement in local organizations reflects the University’s strategic goal of building partnerships in our service region to meet key areas of community need.”
FAU’s MacArthur Campus in Jupiter offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The campus is also home to the Wilkes Honors College, the Lifelong Learning Society, and Scripps Florida research facilities.
