RECOGNIZING LEADERS:

Eminent Scholars’ Role Expanding at FAU

As the heart and soul of the academic enterprise, the faculty brings a brilliant human kaleidoscope of interests, talents and specialized knowledge to all institutions of higher learning. Florida Atlantic University’s faculty has ranked among the very best since the University opened its doors nearly 44 years ago. From that day to this, FAU students have had words of the highest gratitude and praise for the men and women who stand before them in the University’s classrooms and laboratories as their teachers and mentors.

Forming an elite group within the already distinguished company of FAU’s faculty are the Eminent Scholars – world-class experts in their fields who occupy million-dollar endowed chairs. “Florida Atlantic University is extremely fortunate to have 13 Eminent Scholar chairs, thanks to the great generosity of our benefactors in the community,” says FAU President Frank T. Brogan. “These magnificent endowments, some of them well in excess of a million dollars, have given us the ability to quite literally reach for the brightest stars in the academic heavens, and we’ve done just that.”

FAU’s Eminent Scholars are recognized leaders in fields that include the arts and humanities, brain science, community education, engineering, growth management, the Holocaust and Judaic Studies, international business, nursing, philosophy, small business, and social science. President Brogan sees both their number and their role in the life of the University expanding dramatically over the next decade. And beginning this fall he wants these superstars to share their special gifts with as many people as possible.

“In the very near future, many of our Eminent Scholars will be teaching undergraduate as well as graduate courses,” he says. “Also, many of them will be reaching out to the community by giving free lectures on subjects within their areas of expertise. It’s no exaggeration to say that our Eminent Scholars are living, breathing treasures, and each one has something uniquely valuable to offer our students and the public at large. There should be no limits placed on how and when their lights can shine.”
