FAU Hosts Michael and Madelyn Savarick Music Competition
BOCA RATON, FL (May 25, 2007) – Florida Atlantic University’s department of music recently hosted the Michael and Madelyn Savarick Music Competition on FAU’s Boca Raton campus. The annual competition is for musicians ages 11-18 in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Martin counties. First-place winners included:
- Composition - Michael Anderson, Wellington, Lynn Conservatory
- Winds/Percussion - Natalie Zeldin, Boca Raton, Atlantic High
- Voice - Birgid Kegel, Palm City, South Fork High School
- Piano - Mark Mayea, Boca Raton, Omni Middle School
- Strings - Chloe Fedor, Davie, Broward Virtual School
Judges included renowned opera singer Dean Peterson, and FAU faculty members Edward Turgeon, Sean Murray, Stuart Glazer, Patricia Fleitas and Rebecca Lautar. The competitors were judged on their artistry and individuality. The judges also evaluated their focus, and the quality of their personal music statements and concepts. The competition was sponsored by Madelyn Savarick, Floss Keesely and Wachovia Bank, in collaboration with FAU’s School of the Arts in the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.
“We are grateful to Madelyn Savarick for her love of music and of young musicians. Her vision, wisdom and generosity made this exciting event possible,” said Heather Coltman, chair of FAU’s department of music.
