FAU is Only State University to
On-Campus Dental Services
BOCA RATON , FL (May 10, 2007) – Florida Atlantic University students in need of dental assistance do not have to seek help off-campus to receive it. FAU is currently the only state university in Florida to offer its students a full-range of dental care through its own dental clinic, located in the Student Health Services building, 777 Glades Road, Boca Raton campus.
“ With their busy schedules, college students often forget the importance of visiting a dentist,” said Cathie Wallace, director of student health services at FAU. “And students on a limited budget may have no discretionary funds for expensive dental care. Many students who visit our dental clinic have had little, if any, dental care in their lives, providing our dental staff the opportunity to teach them the basics about good dental hygiene needed to promote healthy teeth and gums.”
FAU’s dental clinic began offering full-time services in 2000, and has had 2,048 visits in 2006, compared to 1,000 in 2000. Staffed by board-certified dentist Dr. Michele Alex for the past 10 years, and two part-time licensed dental hygienists, the clinic offers general dentistry services, including fillings, sealants, cleanings, bitewing and full-mouth X-rays, root planing and curettage, as well as home fluoride treatments, teeth whitening and gum reductions.
A student consultation with Dr. Alex costs $10. If students need dental care beyond the scope of dental services offered at FAU, referrals will be made to community dentists.
FAU’s dental clinic is open Mondays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The dental clinic is closed on weekends, and state and university holidays.
